About English Walks

Picture
The famous 'Meet me under the clock' at Waterloo Station
English Walks is a London-based project. We offer you the opportunity to do short walks with English native speakers (including a qualified English teacher) and develop your English conversation skills. We want you to be able to speak English throughout the walk and learn new vocabulary.

We choose areas that visitors to London don't always see. What better way to learn about British culture than listening to the history with English speakers? What better way to improve your English than speaking to native English speakers?

Every walk lasts approximately 5 hours (this includes the café at the beginning and end).

About your teacher and walking guide

Picture

Gail Golding is the founder of English Walks.

Gail says: 'I love walking, I love history, I love London and I love having the opportunity to teach people about British culture and the English language. It is an enormous pleasure to share London's history with our guests and show them so many interesting, old and historic buildings and places. I enjoy taking people to some of London's magnificent green and open spaces and to the many secret corners of London that often come as a surprise.

What qualifications and experience does Gail have?

  • University of Cambridge ESOL Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) at the higher B grade.
  • University of Cambridge ESOL Level 4 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
  • BA (Hons) English Literature and History
  • MA Children's Literature

Gail teaches upper-intermediate classes within a language club and elementary classes in a language school. She also teaches students on a one-to-one basis and organises and runs an English conversation group. She has taught English to refugees, mostly at an elementary level as well as taught in the language department of a college to multi-lingual groups of students at different levels.

Gail previously worked in theatre and was an independent trainer in London for several years in the health sector.

Other English native speakers who you will meet from time to time

Jessica Corbyn

Picture
Jessica is the one in the middle between Cristina and Gail
Jessica has taught general English, English for Business and courses for all levels of Cambridge exams for more years than she wants to confess.  She is also the author of a preparation book for Cambridge Proficiency. She has a B.A from University College London in English, a postgraduate certificate in Education and the Royal Society of Arts Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. She has worked as a manager in the state and private sectors of education and for several years was an examiner for the University of Cambridge examinations in spoken English.

Her great loves are the cinema, the Italian language and walking  - you are very welcome to join her and others on a 23 mile walk  - that's 37 km  -  between 2 beauty spots on the South Coast on July 7th . BUT that one is exceptional and she just put it in because she wanted to show off a bit!

If you're thinking "Show off  is of those awful phrasal verbs", we can promise you more of them on English Walks but with lots of help to make you more confident about dealing with them so you won't be put off when they crop up in conversation!

I started to love the outdoors when I did the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award. I was the first British Asian woman to complete it and receive the award from the Duke of Edinburgh himself. I started a Duke of Edinburgh award society at university which I organised for two years.

I have hiked (walked) to the top of Mt Kenya (5,199M) and Mt Kilimanjaro (5,895M). It felt an enormous privilege to do these. I am also in love with the British landscape. I have learnt about British birds, wildflowers and trees. When I walk in Britain, I love it when a beautiful church or historical site suddenly appears. For me walking is enough to cleanse my soul and feel the earth coming up through the soles of my feet. It is my greatest wish to explore the Scottish and Welsh hills.

I am a lawyer and I began my PhD. I also really enjoy the study of the English language and all types of literature. At the moment I am reading Peter Ackroyd’s book about London.

Bob Carpenter

Picture
Bob spent 40 years living in London and knows the city inside out.  He has worked for the Tourist Information Centre in Greenwich and taught local history in schools.  In his spare time he explores the countryside with his walking club based in London.  He also likes travel, theatre, cinema and eating out.

Chris Havell

Picture
Chris Havell is a retired teacher who has worked and lived in London for forty eight years. He still remembers the excitement of moving to the city from the countryside and experiencing the energy of the capital for the first time. He now regularly walks through London exploring and researching new areas of it and observing the lives of its inhabitants. He likes to share his knowledge and enjoyment of London with visitors.
